Cold-Blooded Lover ~ Excerpt #mafiaromance #contemporaryromance #MFRWBookHooks

Available on Amazon

She’s not the woman he meant to kidnap–but she may just be the woman he needs.

Massimiliano Beneventi

I told my father the cartel Colombians were not to be trusted. Now he’s dead, along with my eldest brother, and I’m left in charge of the family. I’ve declared vengeance on the killer who took out the only people I love. And I know exactly how I’ll exact my revenge: I’ll take his daughter and make her my own. After all, he owes me a family.

Valentina Velazquez

In the worst case of mistaken identity ever, Mafia Prince Max Beneventi kidnaps me instead of the Colombian Cartel Princess he’s after. He’s cold-blooded and brutal, and if he learns of his mistake, I’m sure he’ll kill me. Escape is my only hope for survival. But the longer I’m with him, the more I crave what only he can give me.

“Cold-Blooded Lover” is the first book in the King of Clubs series. It is a stand-alone Dark Mafia Enemies-to-Lovers Kidnapping Romance, complete with HEA and no cliffhangers.

Please note: this book is a dark mafia romance that contains mature content, graphic violence and may contain triggers. If such materials offend you, please do not read.

We reach the bottom of the stairs leading onto the tarmac, and there’s another black car waiting for us. But this one is not a sedan—it’s a sports car of some kind, sleek, shiny, and low to the ground.

Standing next to it is the single most gorgeous man I have ever seen in my entire life. He’s tall and muscular, but not as thick and burly as the goons he sent to kidnap me. Like Goon Number Two, he’s got dark hair and eyes, but no visible tattoos.

Massimiliano Beneventi, I assume. Because this has to be the boss, given the way the people around me are acting.

I don’t care, though. I tilt up my chin and firm my jaw, determined not to let him see me in misery.

His dark eyes bore into me, and something hot flickers in their depths as he scans me from head to toe.

My stomach clenches, but this time it’s not from fear—it’s pure lust, and it spreads through my whole body. I can feel it radiating off me in waves, and when his mouth quirks up into a grin, I know he sees it, too.

“Hello, Valentina. I’m glad you made it here safely,” he says, but I can hear something under his voice—some kind of sexual heat that burns through me as he gazes into my eyes.

I clench my teeth together, determined not to speak to this monster who has taken me from my perfectly normal life and brought me into something terrifying.

Of Fae and Hate by Quirah Casey – Book Blitz

Hate is a strong word, but at the Nadouraz Academy it’s deadly.

Of Fae & Hate
Quirah Casey
(Of Fae & Hate, #1)
Publication date: July 23rd 2022
Genres: Adult, Reverse Harem, Urban Fantasy

Hate is a strong word, but at the Nadouraz Academy it’s deadly.

I never wanted to attend Nadouraz Academy.
The school for fae is full of spoiled, bratty, powerful royals. I’m none of those things.
Most importantly, no one even knows if I’m even fae.

The first week of school I find myself in a rivalry with more fae than I can keep track of, but it becomes the least of my worries when I end up cursed. What’s worse is that the curse binds me to three fae I hate and one who just may be a demon from the darkest pits of hell: Soskia, Alik, Fox, and Brynsyn.

Now a promise to give the pretentious academy a try, an unbreakable contract, and a wicked curse may seal my death.

I never dreamed the director of the Alien Bride Games might betray me to the monsters I was trying to escape.

But everywhere I look, all I can see is betrayal…

Excerpt

Vos Klavoii, the director of the Bride Games, gave a predatory smile, his teeth shining white against his neon-green skin. “You should have told us you were engaged to a human man. Your fiancé seemed quite desperate to make sure you made it home safely.”

“My fiancé?” My voice rose to a squeak at the end of the word. “He told you we were going to be married? That’s not true. I never accepted his proposal. I never even took the ring he tried to give me. He’s the entire reason I’m here—I was running away from him.”

“That’s not what Mr. Romano told us.”

“Ask Bian! I told him the whole story.” At that moment, I wished more than anything that I had accepted the sexy, hot pink alien’s offer to accompany me to this meeting.

Klavoii shrugged carelessly, the movement just a little too practiced to be believable. “Your fiancé was quite convincing. Especially when he told me there was a reward for your safe return.”

I spun around, looking for an escape route from Klavoii’s office.

But even if I could get out of here, where could I escape to? I was on a space station. There were only two ways off Station 21: use a transporter or take a ship. But I didn’t have access to the transporter tubes. And I didn’t know how to fly one of the spaceships docked in the hangars.

A round, porthole-style window to one side of Klavoii’s desk caught my attention. Through it, I could see stars shining in the deep black of space.

Make that three ways.

I could leave the space station through one of the airlocks Bian had shown me on our tour.

It wasn’t the worst death I could imagine, stepping out into the cold nothingness.

At least it wouldn’t take long. I’d be dead in a matter of moments.

There was only one problem.

I wanted to live.

I was working alone in my office while Carla, my new part-time nanny, played with Joey upstairs, when Ariana texted me.

Hey, chica! I met the most amazing man today. And guess what? He wants to meet you!

Groaning, I dropped my head into one hand. Then I texted her back.

I told you, I’m just not ready to date yet.

And I really wasn’t. I was far too busy working out how to deal with all the competing demands on my time.

I had a day-job as a website tester, a part-time monster-hunting job that required regular training with my far-too-hot werewolf boss, way too many PTA meetings, an ex-husband who was still trying to sue me for custody of my kids, an end-of-school carnival to plan, and two very demanding children—both of whom now knew about my alter-ego as a badass vampire slayer (though I hadn’t yet told them about all the other creatures that went bump in the night).

I did not have time to date.

Besides, the last thing I wanted was to go out on another date with someone I’d have to kill by the end of the evening.

Because really, wouldn’t that be just my luck, to have to take out another monster I went out with?

My phone rang, and I answered it without looking, assuming it was Ariana calling to try to badger me into going out with the “amazing man” she’d met.

Instead, it was the amazing man I had met.

“Jenna,” Bentley said, “I have an assignment for you.”

Great. Job Number Two needed my attention when I hadn’t even finished Job Number One for the day.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“It looks like there are a couple of werewolves tearing up a Walmart in Plano—and you’re the closest team member. I need you to go check it out, see if you can get them to calm down.”

“You want me to confront rampaging werewolves in Walmart?”

“Yes, please. Here are the details.”

I sighed and pulled a notepad across the desk, prepared to take notes.

Here we go again…

In the kitchen, two vampires still stood guard at the exit into the garage. Reaching into my purse, I pulled out the first metal object I touched and brandished it at the vampire guards.

“Get out of our way, or I will…” My voice trailed off as I glanced down at what I was holding. Then I rallied and continued speaking. “This spoon might not look dangerous. But it’s silver, and I’m a Chosen One.”

One of the guards snickered, and I took a threatening step toward him, lowering my voice. “Do you really want to bet against me? I can shove this spoon into your chest and scoop out your heart without ever breaking a sweat.”

I stood over a pile of bubbling red goo slowly spreading out and sinking into the surrounding dirt. I glanced back and forth between the sludge pile and the small tree branch in my hand, finally forcing my fingers to uncurl. The stick tumbled from my nerveless grip, hit the thin strip of struggling grass at my feet, and then bounced off the curb and clattered into the parking space next to my car.

“What the hell just happened?” I was sure I had spoken the words aloud, but I couldn’t hear them.

As if from a distance, the echo of sharp voices tumbled against me, cutting into the numbness cushioning me from reality.

“Go, go, go!”

My heart pounded in time to the shouted instructions.

Helmeted figures in dark clothes poured out of the back of a black van parked three rows over in the otherwise almost-empty parking lot.

A SWAT team?

The soldiers swarmed around me, buzzing like bees, their voices distorted by the helmets—or possibly by something in my brain.

I glanced back down at the pile of clumpy red jelly at my feet, then gagged as I remembered what it really was.

“Ma’am,” a woman’s voice next to me said, and I realized she had been repeating it for several seconds.

I lifted my gaze toward her more slowly than I intended. “Yes?”

My voice sounded as far away as theirs had seconds ago.

Her tone turned even more intense, as if that were possible. “Ma’am, did he bite you anywhere?”

My hand crept up to my neck, and I rubbed at it absently, pulling my palm away to check for blood. “I don’t think so,” I finally answered, holding my clean fingers out for her to see. “He tried, though.”

The woman in uniform next to me popped her visor open. “We’ll need to have our medics check you out, but I think you’re right.” She cast an experienced gaze over me. “No blood,” she announced to her team. “Time to clean up this mess.”

The commandos grabbed my arms and tugged me off the strip of landscaping. I stumbled away, and they began sweeping across the red clumps with flamethrowers, sending black smoke curling into the sky.

Excerpt

Ceri said a swift, silent prayer and ducked into the cave mouth. Here, she undid the belt at her hips so her robes hung smooth as they should, and she slid off her Wellington boots. From this entrance, she’d tread barefoot over the chilly surface of the compacted pale clay and raw quartz pebbles of the path. Along and down, she searched with her fingers over the cold and damp rock wall, feeling her way down. She descended deeper into the gloom and passed the low-hanging lump of granite Mam always called Lizzie’s Pap. The darkness now complete, her stomach rolling and her breathing rapid, she heard the echo of Mam’s instructions in her mind as she stepped for the first time onto the gravel-edged shore where the dark waters of the Jet Llyn joined her world to that of her new charges. She counted four paces forward. Blind for now, she stretched out her right arm and felt about in the darkness until she found the thick branch of wood holding the torch she needed to light.

Tiny pebbles stuck under her toes. The nip in the air sent a shiver over her as she set her willow wand down, and with her fingers a bit shaky, she struck the match to light the moss wound around the top of the pole wedged into the gravel. The torch flared. The dry stalks, which must be replaced each visit here, took easily and burned up bright. She breathed out in a rush of relief. So far, everything was as it should be. A fresh rash of trembles raised gooseflesh all down her arms and not because of the chill in the cavern.

Ceri picked up her wand and lifted the lit torch. She carried the light in front of her in her left hand until she reached the scrap of gritty beach with its short rock causeway that projected forward like a finger reaching out toward the middle of the deep water. Here, she held the torch shoulder high so the light glittered and reflected as in a mirror off the depths of the Jet Llyn. In her other hand, she held the quartz-crystal-tipped rod, and pointing it, she positioned the clear stone on her wand so it hovered over the still dark surface.

She swallowed, gave a little quiver, forced down her apprehension, and sucked in a breath.

Beneath the quartz point of her rod, illuminated by the bright torchlight, a single fat bubble rose. The water rippled. Stronger circular movements followed until small waves lapped at the shore inches from where she curled her toes so they gripped into the stones. An itch tickled in her palm, but she kept the rod steady.

Just as Mam said, they were coming for her.

The dragons were coming.

Waking Up Dead by Margo Bond Collins

Waking Up Dead

When Dallas resident Callie Taylor died young, she expected to go to Heaven, or maybe Hell. Instead, she met her fate early thanks to a creep with a knife and a mommy complex. Now she’s witnessed another murder, and she’s not about to let this one go. She’s determined to help solve it before an innocent man goes to prison. And to answer the biggest question of all: why the hell did she wake up in Alabama?

_____________________________________________

Excerpt

When I died, I expected to go to heaven.

Okay. Maybe hell. It’s not like I was perfect or anything. But I was sort of hoping for heaven.

Instead, I went to Alabama.

Yeah. I know. It’s weird.

I died in Dallas, my hometown. I was killed, actually. Murdered. I’ll spare you the gruesome details. I don’t like to remember them myself. Some jerk with a knife–and probably a Bad-Mommy complex. Believe me, if I knew where he was, I’d go haunt his ass.

At any rate, by the time death came, I was ready for it–ready to stop hurting, ready to let go. I didn’t even fight it.

And then I woke up dead in Alabama. Talk about pissed off.

You know, even reincarnation would have been fine with me–I could have started over, clean slate and all that. Human, cow, bug. Whatever. But no. I ended up haunting someplace I’d never even been.

That’s not the way it’s supposed to work, right? Ghosts are supposed to be the tortured spirits of those who cannot let go of their earthly existence. If they could be convinced to follow the light, they’d leave behind said earthly existence and quit scaring the bejesus out of the poor folks who run across them. That’s what all those “ghost hunter” shows on television tell us.

Let me tell you something. The living don’t know jack about the dead.

Not this dead chick, anyway.
