Excerpt:

The hill climb seemed endless. Up, up, up we went, keeping beneath the cover of trees and shrubs. Other than the fact that Queenie periodically growled at Ben, the dog seemed to enjoy the journey. Though the pine-scented air felt cooler under the trees, my T-shirt soon became soaked with sweat. I wanted to take a drink from my canteen and pour some water into my palm for Queenie, but worried about the etiquette. Would I have to offer Ben a drink? I wasn’t sure I wanted to swap germs with the guy. I longed to ask how much farther we had to go, but held off. He sounded pissed enough the last time I asked. Instead, I kept my mouth shut and continued climbing.
Ben stopped, held up his hand. He leaned in, his body heat adding to the day’s warmth as he whispered in my ear. “We gotta keep real quiet now. Watch where you step. Try to make as little noise as possible.” He moved off, walking in a strange semi-crouch.
I tried to mimic his stance as I followed. He stopped at the hill’s crest and knelt behind a tree. I hunkered down in his shadow, my arm around Queenie. Below us stretched rows and rows of bright green plants. Slender pines edged the field. Two men walked between the rows, the height of the crop almost to their knees. The large buds on the branches of the closest plants were easy to spot. Each man carried a plastic jug, dribbling liquid on the crop rows as they passed. The nearer of the two wore khakis plus a dirt-and sweat-stained undershirt. The distant man looked more pulled together: short-sleeved shirt tucked into his pants, hair tidy.
From what I could see, other people had spent time in the clearing, too. Maybe even lived there. Hammocks hung between half a dozen trees. Empty food cans rusted in a pile. The remains of an old campfire sat surrounded by cooking pans, food wrappers, and discarded cigarette packs. On the far side of the field sat a trash heap. Two men didn’t make a mess this size.
Black hoses ran between the rows of plants into the woods beyond. Now that we had settled in our spot for a couple minutes, the odor hit me. The place smelled like an outhouse.
Queenie’s body tensed, but she stayed silent. I leaned down and rubbed my cheek against the top of her head.
Gemma once tried growing a couple pot plants behind her garage. A gardening crew took care of their property and her parents never went behind that building. But none of the plants I’d seen before looked like this. Star-shaped clusters rose toward the sky, the glossy leaves reflecting back the sun’s rays. I stared at the sheer size of the growing area and tried to calculate the number of trees someone had chopped down. This was no home patch. This was a huge commercial operation. Ben warned me, but I hadn’t believed him.
Now I knew. We were in way over our heads.

Excerpt

Inside the stall, I heard giggles and saw three pairs of feet under the door wearing designer boots. “She is so freaking weird.” I heard one of them say.

“I know, right? I heard she kissed that gross Shane Baker with blue lipstick on. I don’t care if it was a challenge, that’s nasty,” a second voice said.

“Who’s that girl she’s been hanging out with?” asked the third voice. I tensed.

“She’s a new girl,” the first voice said. “I hate to break the news to you, Haley. I think Chase likes her. Have you seen the way he looks at her?” My heart flip-flopped.

“Uh-uh. There’s no way,” Haley said. “Have you seen her hand? It’s disgusting.”

Tears sprang into my eyes. I squeezed my eyes shut and pushed them back. My heart thumped against my chest. My blood boiled, flowing hot and angry. I was ticked! I flung the stall door open. Three startled faces gaped at me. I stepped up to the sink and washed my hands, purposely shook the water off of them so my right hand was visible, and made eye contact with lemon-head, who I now knew was Haley.

The three girls watched me wide-eyed and silent. I strolled out of the bathroom with my head held high.

Sanguinary, by Margo Bond Collins
A Night Shift Novel

Detective Cami Davis and her sexy, cowboy-turned-vampire informant are all that’s standing between humanity and monsters who would rule the world—and all that’s standing between them having a torrid love affair is the fact that he’s an enemy of humanity.

THROUGH DARKEST TEMPTATION

When Dallas police detective Cami Davis joined the city’s vampire unit, she planned to use the job as a stepping-stone to a better position in the department. She didn’t know then what she knows now: A silent war rages between humans and their supposedly pacified predators, and the vampires are winning. With the clock running out on her kind, Cami will do whatever she must to defeat the “Sanguinary.”

Enter Reese Fulton, a disaffected ex-cop and a vampire. She can’t exactly trust him, but with his cowboy boots and good-ole-boy drawl he’s the perfect beard for Cami’s fledgling undercover operation. Yet playing Reese’s Claimed—a vampire’s personal bloodgiver—isn’t as straightforward as she was led to believe. His bite is as enthralling as his dimpled smile, and soon Cami is wondering which will pose more of a challenge: subduing the enemies of humanity…or her own desire.

Excerpt

As Garrett and I headed down the street toward the Blood House, my partner pushed his shirtsleeves up until the vampire bite marks on his inner elbows showed clearly, like ammo loaded into a bandolier, marching up his arm and tracing along the blue vein that showed underneath. There were more of them since the last time I’d looked.

I wasn’t sure how fucked up Garrett really was—or rather, whether or not it mattered that Garrett stayed seriously fucked up, both physically and mentally—but knowing he wasn’t a hundred percent made me even more wary than I might have been otherwise.

“You good?” he asked, glancing at me out of the corner of his eye. I wanted to make him stop and go over the plan one more time—but really, it was fairly straightforward.

“Good enough,” I said. “We get in, I pretend to hook up with some cowboy vampire, we get out.”

Fairy, Texas by Margo Bond Collins ~ Book Hooks ~ #MFRWauthor

e6230-logobookhooks

Welcome to this week’s Book Hooks, hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers!

FairyNewFinalCovermargobondcollins-300dpi-3125x4167

Laney Harris thinks there might be monsters in Fairy, Texas.

She’s right.

When her mother remarried and moved them to a town where a date meant hanging out at the Sonic, Laney figured that “boring” would have a whole new meaning. A new stepsister who despised her and a high school where she was the only topic of gossip were bad enough. But when she met the school counselor (and his terminal bad breath), she grew suspicious. Especially since he had wings that only she could see. And then there were Josh and Mason, two gorgeous glimmering-eyed classmates whose interest in her might not be for the reasons she hoped. Not to mention that dead guy she nearly tripped over in gym class.

Boring takes on an entirely new dimension in Fairy, Texas.

If she’s going to live here, she’ll have to learn to wing it.

“It’s a glamour,” Josh said. “It draws norms to us.”

I held myself completely still. “Like pheromones?”

“More like a moth to the flame,” he muttered. He leaned closer, so that we stood less than an inch apart. He bent down and touched his lips to mine.

My eyes fluttered closed and I leaned closer so that we were pressed against each other. His kiss was slow, like his smile, and seeped into me until I could feel myself glowing along with him.

The Magic of Roan Mountain, a Guest Post by Blaire Edens, author of The Witch of Roan Mountain

Rises 1

Welcome to Something Wicked Rises!

Today, I’m featuring a guest post by Blaire Edens, author of The Witch of Roan Mountain. Check out her post below, then be sure to enter to win an ebook copy of her book, leave a comment and let us know: what’s your favorite ghost story? Then HOP to check out the rest of the posts!

The Magic of Roan Mountain

Roan Mountain, located on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, is a magical place. Throughout history, beginning with the Native Americans, there have been a series of spooky stories associated with it. The mountain is covered in a dense stand of Spruce and Fir trees and it includes the world’s largest natural Rhododendron garden, it’s nearly 6,000 feet above sea level.

Roan1

The trees are covered in moss and much of the time it’s covered in a foggy mist, making it look like something out of a fantasy novel.

Roan2

While there are plenty of existing spooky stories to draw from in the Appalachian Mountains, when I wrote The Witch of Roan Mountain, I decided to create my own legend by using historical elements that effected the region in the last hundred and fifty years.

Witches fascinate me. They always have. From the first time I read the classic Witch of Blackbird Pond, I was hooked on the idea that most “witches” were women who were simply misunderstood or scapegoats. In the case of my witch, Delphine, she’s a little bit of both.

A woman who’s trapped in an abusive marriage, unable to marry the love of her life, Delphine is the perfect scapegoat for the small mountain community she lives in, and because of a disability, she’s used to the scorn of her neighbors.  What she doesn’t expect is being accused of a crime she didn’t commit.

When I went to Roan Mountain on a research trip in the summer of 2015, it was much more complex, more interesting than I remembered. I realized how lonely it could be, how remote. How the extreme weather and isolation could be crushing, even to a woman who was quite used to being an outcast.

The rare beauty of a place like Roan Mountain comes with a price and I loved exploring the idea of what that price may be, both for my witch and her contemporary counterpart, a disillusioned lawyer who it trying to regroup after losing her job.

Roan3

I hope you enjoy The Witch of Roan Mountain. It helped me connect to the land of my ancestors in a way I’d never been able to access before and in many ways, the story freed me, too.

Witch of Roan Mountain

Maeve McMahan, a criminal defense attorney, has just blown the case of her career. When she returns home to the mountains of North Carolina to clear her head, she moves back in with her grandmother. On an easy hike, she meets the one woman she never expected to see: Delphine, The Witch of Roan Mountain.

Accused of a terrible crime she didn’t commit, Delphine has been haunting the county since just after the Civil War and she can’t rest until her name is cleared. She’s counting on Maeve’s help to get to the bottom of the century-old mystery.

Campbell Hyatt, a sheriff’s deputy, has never gotten over his first love, Maeve. When her grandmother breaks her leg, Campbell’s on duty and he finds Maeve at the top of Roan Mountain, convinced she’s seen a ghost. A cop who doesn’t believe in ghosts, he thinks Maeve needs to be focused on her grandmother not an old legend that hits a little too close to home for his liking.

With Maeve’s car out of commission and Granny stuck in the hospital, Campbell and Maeve are thrown together in a quest to find out why Delphine was branded a witch. It will take both of them to get to the bottom of a nineteenth century story love story that may impact them more than they realize. Can they banish a ghost without rekindling an old flame of their own?

EXCERPT

Maeve decided to start with an easy hike. It had been years since she’d roamed these mountains and the gym work-outs she’d done in Atlanta didn’t even come close to getting her into the shape she was in when she lived here. The Roan Mountain Gardens trail was just what she needed. Easy and quickly rewarding. She tossed her things in the passenger seat of the Volvo and drove down Jane’s Bald Road.

She turned at Carver’s Gap and followed the winding road up toward the gardens. After stopping at the kiosk, paying the usage fee and putting the hang tag on her rear-view mirror, she steered her Volvo sedan into a parking spot. The parking lot was empty. Too early for the fall foliage peak and too late for the summer riot of Rhodendrons, Maeve had the place to herself. She grabbed her water bottle and a small daypack from the trunk and headed toward the paved trail that led to one of the best views anywhere.

Because it was still early, most of the boreal forest leading to the overlook patio was still shrouded in mist. Maeve took her time winding through the moss-covered trees, savoring the rich earthy smell of the soils and the beautiful, vibrant greens of the plants. As she walked, the fog began to lift and disperse, allowing the sun’s light to penetrate through the trees in watery stripes.

She had no idea why she’d stayed away so long.

It was eerie being alone up here. Even though she’d been on this path dozens of times, this was the first time she’d been by herself.

In high school, it had been one of her favorite places. She and Campbell used to come up here and picnic. Kiss. Make love. She smiled at the memory.

Campbell Hyatt. Her first love.

He was still in town. A sheriff’s deputy. Single, no kids. Granny kept up with him and Maeve suspected that the old woman still fostered dreams that Maeve would come to her senses and marry Campbell.

It was too late for that. By a decade.

Campbell would always be a small-town boy. He’d never leave Avery County. The place, with its towering green mountains and ice-cold streams, was as much as part of him as the blood running through his veins.

Maeve got out of the county as soon as she had a chance. Undergraduate degree at Clemson University and then law school at Wake Forest. As soon as she’d graduated, she was off to Atlanta to work for one of the best criminal law firms in the South.

She’d planned to stay with Palmer, Norris, Howard for the rest of her career.

Until she’d let her ethics get in the way.

She had blown a big case. A case she could’ve won, should’ve won. But she just couldn’t compromise her principles.

Now she was back where she started. Avery County, North Carolina. No job, no plan. No direction. But she wouldn’t be here for long. It was too small, too confining.

Maeve took a deep breath and tried, for the thousandth time, to relax. Chill. To not think about the Juris Doctor she’d worked so hard to get only to piss away less than ten years later.

She rounded the corner and the view cleared her mind instantly.

Spreading out in front of her were the green folds of mountains and the crisp tucks of valleys for as far as she could see. Some of the trees, especially the ones high on the ridges, were beginning to turn yellow. Fall was on its way and would light these mountains aflame with color.

She sat down on a bench and pulled her water bottle and a granola bar from her daypack.

Maeve heard the woman before she saw her. A childhood spent in the woods had given her sharp ears. There was no mistaking the soft footsteps on the fallen leaves coming toward the bench as those of a woman.

When she looked up, she was shocked.

Staring back at her was the one woman she ever expected to see.

*****

I’d known that she was coming. I’d felt it in the wind, the trees, the change of the seasons. We were tied together, she and I, and she was the only one who might be able to help me. I’d prayed for her to hurry.

Even dead women pray. Probably more than the living ones.

The woman on the bench was small, tiny. Fragile. More like a teenager than a woman. Long blond hair pulled back off her oval-shaped face. The most remarkable thing about her was the way her blue eyes were as sharp as icicles.

It worried me. I’d waited a long time for her to come home and now, looking at her from behind the trunk of a balsam tree, I wasn’t sure she was going to be able to help me.

She wasn’t like her granny. Where her granny was mostly gristle and vinegar, this girl was cotton and clouds. I was terrified that I’d wasted all my energy to get up here just to find I’d been wrong.

I wasn’t sure she’d even be able to see me. Not at first. It might take her awhile to believe I was real. Well, mostly real.

I eased out so that I was standing on the pathway. She turned immediately. I put all my energy into making myself visible. It felt strange. I’d spent so many years hiding and now I was trying to do the opposite. I bit my lip and concentrated as hard as I could.

Her eyebrows went up.

She saw me.

That fast.

Maybe I was right in waiting for her. She had the gift.

“I’m Delphine,” I said. It took all the energy I had to mutter two words. Back when I’d been alive, I could talk all day without flagging an inch but now it was exhausting.

The woman nodded. “I know who you are.”

“Help,” I muttered. “Need help.”

And then I faded into nothing.

Legally Undead, by Margo Bond Collins, World Weaver Press

A reluctant vampire hunter, stalking New York City as only a scorned bride can.

Elle Dupree has her life all figured out: first a wedding, then her Ph.D., then swank faculty parties where she’ll serve wine and cheese and introduce people to her husband the lawyer.

But those plans disintegrate when she walks in on a vampire draining the blood from her fiancé Greg. Horrified, she screams and runs–not away from the vampire, but toward it, brandishing a wooden letter opener.

As she slams the improvised stake into the vampire’s heart, a team of black-clad men bursts into the apartment. Turning around to face them, Elle discovers that Greg’s body is gone—and her perfect life falls apart.

Excerpt

There is no adequate way to describe having a vampire feed on you when you are under its spell. I felt the pain as her sharp fangs entered my skin, but the feeling was as much pleasure as pain. My body reacted as it might react to a lover. My nipples hardened and a dull ache began throbbing deep inside me in time to my heartbeat as it pumped the blood through my veins and into Deirdre’s mouth. I watched her throat moving as she swallowed and I moaned aloud; I would have thrashed in my chair if I could have moved.

The bite was yearning and fulfillment, desire and orgasm, all in one. My vision swam into darkness, and I closed my eyes, leaned my head back against the chair. Pleasure washed over me in dark waves, leaving me breathless and limp with no energy for thought.

I love the fact that the vampires in this film are truly monstrous—they look like they’ve been transformed into rat-faced horrors with sharp teeth, and they are utterly vicious. I also like the nice shout-outs to Dracula: the vampires show up on a ship and come slinking into town without warning to take over.

The giveaway runs October 18th – November 1st and is open worldwide. 1 winner will win the Prize Pack and 1 winner will win the Scavenger Hunt Prize Pack. Laughing Vixen Lounge is responsible for all giveaway details. Please visit the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog

Triple Dare
by Regina Kyle
Series: Art of Seduction, #3
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Erotic
Publisher: Harlequin
Release Date: November 17, 2015 – Print; December 1, 2015 – eBook

Lights. Camera.
And a whole lotta action…

Globe-trotting fashion photographer Ivy Nelson is home to help her family out of a jam. When she donates her services to a charity calendar, the last thing she expects is hunky firefighter—and object of all her hottest fantasies—Cade Hardesty to walk through the door. Cade is ready to get naked for a good cause, and the heat Ivy feels is anything but professional.

When a sexy dare turns into a scorching kiss, they can’t help but give in to their desires. But Cade wants Ivy in his bed for more than one night. Can the hometown firefighter convince the photographer that her wanderlust should lead her into his arms for good, or will one of them run before they both get burned?

Regina Kyle knew she was destined to be an author when she won a writing contest at age ten with a touching tale about a squirrel and a nut pie. By day, she writes dry legal briefs, representing the state in criminal appeals. At night, she writes steamy romance with heart and humor.

A lover of all things theatrical, Regina lives on the Connecticut coast with her husband, teenage daughter and two melodramatic cats. When she’s not writing, she’s most likely singing, reading, cooking or watching bad reality television. She’s a member of Romance Writers of America and of her local RWA chapter.
